August 9, 2018 REGULAR CHURCH COUNCIL MEETING

                             REGULAR CHURCH COUNCIL MEETING – Aug. 9, 2018
 
Present:  Pastor Megan Preston, Greg Jans,  Mardelle Crist, Richard Larson, Gabby Swisher, Jeff Niedenthal, Randa Larsen,  Brian Weseman, and Sharon Smith. 
 
Greg called the meeting to order at 8:07, following the Mission BBQ.  Mardelle’s devotions were about our recent emphasis in worship on texts involving bread.  Love can show in the ordinary, most commonplace things in life, as well as in exceptional things.
 
1 to 1 Challenge:  Brian shared that 7 or 8 people he’d talked to attended the Mission BBQ.  Greg reached out to a couple people, too.
 
Reports:

1. Minutes of the July 12 meeting were emailed to the council.  Jeff moved for approval, seconded by Brian.  Motion passed.

Minutes of the special congregational meeting on July 29, were distributed.
Jeff move to approve, seconded by Brian.  Motion approved.

1. Our treasurer was recently locked out of the accounts, and is working on a solution.  A down payment has been made on the painting project.
2. Since our last council meeting, Pastor Megan has officiated over 4 Sunday worships, done 6 home visitations and communions, gone to 4 text studies, done premarital counseling, attended Tables of 8, and learned how to use Mailchimp, the program we will use for sending out email newsletters.  There was a special congregational meeting, a communion service at Ecumen, a visioning meeting, Wednesday night worship preparations, confirmation planning, rehearsal for and officiating at the Oulicky/Brown wedding, a celebration of Reckdah’s 60th wedding anniversary, attending the regular worship committee meeting, and helping to prepare for the Mission BBQ. 

Committee Reports:

1. Christian Education and Youth – Gabby said that she would be responsible for the youth selling refreshments for the Antique Car Run on the 18th, while Dan Cannon would be in charge of the youth at the popcorn stand on Thursday, Aug. 16 in Litchfield.
2. Church Properties – Brian said that painting is scheduled for late August into early September.  Fences near the air conditioners are nearly done. Both air conditioning units are repaired. 
3. Mardelle said there was nothing new with Organizations and Activities.
4. Finance and Stewardship – The $20,000 to be used in 2019 is now invested in the money market at the bank.
5. Missions and Outreach – Richard said he was satisfied with the Mission BBQ results, which may reach $3,000, all to go to the CARE Program.  After discussion, Mardelle moved to schedule the Mission Auction for Sept. 30, seconded by Richard.  Motion approved.
6. Personnel – Jeff reminded us that Federal posters concerning employees need to be posted. 
7. Worship, Music and Arts – worship will revert back to 10:30 on Sept. 9.  Everybody seems to like the new worship setting. 

Old Business –

• Cleaning out Frank’s Place and storage areas – progress has been made.  Brian and Greg will continue to work on it.  Decent furniture will need to be procured for the youth.
• Steeple painting – there was discussion about a special fundraiser to use for steeple work and window repair.  The goal is $7,500.  Richard will address the congregation on Sunday.
• Preparing for a shooting incident – Gabby said that Sam Swisher’s schedule is changing, and would like to wait until it is set.  Jeff volunteered to provide a draft drawn from ACGC’s policy.
• God’s Work – Our Hands – a Thrivent Action card will be used to purchase fleece for tied blankets, which Virginia Flemming will prepare.  Another project could be church ground clean up.  Mardelle and Randa will arrange for a light lunch.

Brian and Jeff will organize clean-up crews.  People will be asked to bring lawn care equipment and tools.  A note will be in the newsletter. 

• The Church fire alarm system is a work in progress.  Greg has talked to Dean Stenberg about the existing system.  The whole system may need to be changed.
• Waterfall in Pastor’s office – there is a roof leak somewhere.  201 Building Systems is checking on it, and Greg will follow up. 
• AED protocol – our unit needed new batteries and charging pads.  Dan Cannon printed off a user and service guide for it.  Randa will check with the hospital to see if they would provide a class.
• Wednesday night services – the committee decided to try having them every other Wednesday,  beginning Sept. 30, with services being held in the Fellowship Hall.  Confirmation class would have a meal at 6:00, worship would be from 6:30 – 7:00.  At 7:00, confirmation would continue and the choir could practice. 
• Youth Director/Green Lake Co-op – there are two candidates, and one will be chosen in late August.  Cost and benefits would be similar to last year.  Pastor Megan needs a person to work with the younger kids.  She is still interested in encouraging high school students in internship. 

 
 
New Business - 
Randa reminded us about the going away event for Pastor Pete Lee, to be held on  August 19th at 4:00.
 
Executive Session – no meeting.
 
Adjournment and Lord’s Prayer – Greg adjourned the meeting at 9:09, and we all joined in reciting the Lord’s Prayer.
